Our brief

The brief had two parts; first, to design a game that covers the syllabus 6 to 11 year olds are required to master in order to gain entrance into independent and state schools across the UK. Secondly, to allow parents and teachers the ability to monitor a child’s performance, and spot areas of strength or weakness.

Starting with a handful of sample exam papers outlining the syllabus to be covered, we worked our way through to a highly interactive, fully illustrated, and content-rich educational game, complete with progress reports, performance graphs, and the ability to add multiple players to one account. There is also a reward system based on stars and badges, motivating children to play and improve their skills.

Solution

A team of two UX (user experience) experts worked in conjunction with a copywriter to develop the overarching concept and storyline. From there, the team moved onto a few rounds of flowcharts, paper wireframing, and digital wireframing. Next, came the UI (user interface) design. While the UX/UI team were designing the interface, the dev team worked on the app architecture and database structure.

A few months later, Edugames Plus was born. The web app leads players through a magical universe with the aim of defeating the ominous baddie, Monochrine. The world has ten islands that players need to conquer by completing 15 interactive Maths and English games. Each game gives instant feedback so children know where they’ve gone right or wrong. This also creates a tight feedback loop to help cement new skills.

There are goodies and baddies; friends and foes; but most importantly, lots of quality educational content presented in a moreish manner that puts a new spin on learning. Learning has never been more fun!

Technology

Edu Games Plus is comprised of two distinct apps - one for students and parents, and a separate, custom learning management system where administrators manage content and users. Because the apps were built with NodeJS, ReactJS, and MongoDB, we were able to rapidly adjust the applications as new requirements came to light.
